Why We Are Having This Ridiculous Contest:
Let's face it, if you are a true blue (and
yellow) Edhead, this is a traumatic time for
you! The pro tennis season is in full swing and there seems to be more tennis
news than ever. But who can fill the "Stefan
Void"?
Enqvist,
perhaps? Sure, he's eye candy, but Stefan was (is) FAR more than just a
pretty face (along with other obvious assets). In fact, he is greatly admired
by men and women alike for many reasons unrelated to his appealing physical
attributes.
Henman? With
Stefan helping him with his game, it's hard not to hope for him to follow
in the footsteps of the S&V great one. But while Tim's a nice kid, he
lacks that certain undefinable something necessary to inspire "mass
worship."
Of course "Stefan
Jr." has arrived!... But we'll have to
wait 17 or 18 years to see how far from the tree the fruit falls. The fact
of the matter is that Stefan is simply not
replaceable. Nor would we want him to be, of
course. It's time to accept the truth let there be no substitute.
The best we can hope for are frequent exhibitions, a little news now and
then and, of course, we all have our collection of favorite tapes to console
ourselves with (like the Greatest Match of this World: The 1991 US Open
Final, Edberg Over Courier.)
This contest is meant to be therapeutic
for suffering Edheads. Come on and express yourself! Laugh, cry, act like
a complete idiot! It'll make you feel better! We can get through this trying
time if we work together! Send your submissions today! Poems, verse, song,
prose, limericks, whatever. We'll award Edhead t-shirts to the best AND
the worst, so don't be afraid to be dreadful!
Voting will take place eventually...

Entry # 2
Untitled Prose
by Laurie White
His humility and dignity, unsurpassed,
his talent and grace, unequaled.
His smile, so warm and engaging,
his wit, dry and entertaining.
These qualities are only but a part
of this unforgettable man
who has stepped from the limelight to
follow his heart.
Entry #3
"Stefan"
Or "Our feelings after his finale
at the Stockholm Open, 1996"
(To be sung to the tune of "Mandy"
by Barry Manilow)
(A somewhat corny but heartfelt reaction to
the devastating night of his loss to Kulti in the first round by Joyce Friedman)
We remember all the years
You brought us pleasure far and near
A wonderful man
A timeless athlete
A true sportsman
And here...came... the last...tournament
We anticipated it for months
Looking in your eyes
We see a hero
We always realized
How happy you made us
C [ Oh Stefan
H [ Well you came and you gave without taking
O [ And he sent you away (Kulti)
R [ Oh Stefan
U [ Well you volleyed and stopped us from shaking
S [ And we need you today
[ Oh Stefan.......
We're standing on the edge of time
You walked away for one last time
Caught up in a world, of booming serving
The tears are in our eyes
And nothing is right
[CHORUS]
Yesterday's a dream
We face the morning
Crying from the pain
The tears are flowing
[CHORUS]
Oh Stef
Well you came and you gave without taking
But he sent you away
Oh Stef
Well you volleyed and stopped us from shaking
And we need.........you............
(instrumental ending to song)
"Thank you Stefan for 14 wonderful
years"
